All about this Workplace Stress course

This workplace stress course will introduce you to what stress is and that it is very difficult to diagnose by medical professionals.

You will acknowledge the physical effects of stress which include issues that are fairly minimal all the way to life threatening.

In this course you will be introduced to what some of the most common causes of stress are, both in and out of the workplace.

As well as considering the importance of supporting staff who may be undergoing stress and working out what the causes of stress are, so that these can be reduced or eliminated where possible.

You will explore that in a workplace it has been shown there are more absences due to sickness and stress if employees feel as though they cannot discuss difficulties with their employer.

You will learn the importance of one-to-one meetings with managers and how employees can be supported.

The importance of having a support network will also be considered in this course and that this can be a key factor for individuals to avoid stress and to remain mentally well.

You will learn that employers have a legal duty to protect employees from stress at work by carrying out risk assessments and effectively acting on any findings.

This course will finish by looking at how employees can sustain a healthy lifestyle and what to try and avoid to improve there ability to function and to reduce their stress levels.

On completion of the course, students will feel they have gained a greater understanding of stress, how it can impact a person and the things that can be put into place, in the working environment to reduce stress.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

Units covered

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to stress in the workplace – In this first unit you will be introduced to the concept of stress and look at what it is defined as stress and what some of the most common signs and symptoms are. There is also an overview of what the impact of stress might be to the individual.
  • Unit 2 –  Signs and symptoms of stress – This unit will take a look at some of the most common signs of stress that individuals may experience. It considers what some of the physical and emotional signs may be, as well as those which affect behaviour both in and out of the workplace. There are two case studies at the end of the unit to highlight the impact that stress can have on a person.
  • Unit 3 – Common causes of stress – This unit will take into consideration the fact that stress is a personal experience for individuals and that whilst one person may consider something to be the source of stress, this may be very different for others.
  • Unit 4 – Assessing support – This unit will explore how employees can access support within an organisation and how they can be supported whilst in work. It will also consider how they can be supported returning to work, if they have to take a period of sick absence due to stress. The unit considers the importance of one-to-one meetings with managers and how employees can be supported to stay well within the workplace.
  • Unit 5 – Reducing work-related stress – In this unit you will consider how workplace stress can be reduced and what kind of strategies can be put into place to achieve this. You will consider the importance of supporting staff who may be undergoing stress and working out what the causes of stress are, so that these can be reduced or eliminated where possible. The unit also examines how future stresses can be avoided and how this can be monitored within the workplace.
  • Unit 6 – Reasonable adjustments – This unit considers the kinds of reasonable adjustments that organisations can make so that their employees are able to work safely, without detriment to their mental or physical well-being that can be caused by workplace stress. Many different reasonable adjustments are described in relation to the benefits that they may bring to employees.
  • Unit 7 – Health and safety for mental health – This unit considers the importance of health and safety in the workplace, by looking at the policies that employers should have in relation to mental health and well-being and how risk assessments should be carried out to ensure that all employees are safe. You will consider how an employee is considered fit for work, after a period of absence, before then learning how to create a comfortable workstation and how to avoid inactivity within the workplace.
  • Unit 8 – Reasonable adjustments – In the final unit you will examine how employees can sustain a healthy lifestyle including how to eat healthily and how much they should exercise. It considers the negative impacts of drugs and alcohol and how lack of sleep can impact an employee’s ability to function at an adequate capacity and how sleeping can be improved.
