All about this Addiction Counselling course

In our Addiction Counselling course students will learn about the fundamentals of addiction, its definition and types. You will explore the prevalence of addiction and its impact on Society.

You will look at identifying the signs and symptoms of addiction and learn about diagnostics criteria and assessment tools. You will examine the psychological aspects of addiction, addressing trauma, stress and co-occurring mental health disorders and coping mechanisms.

Students will learn about treatment options and medications. You will consider the benefits and limitations of medication-assisted treatments. You will explore CBT and learn about relapse prevention strategies and the role of group therapy.

You will learn about ethical and practical consideration and the importance of confidentiality, boundaries and cultural sensitivity. you will learn more about the requirements for certification as an addiction counsellor, continuing education opportunities and avenues for specialisation.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

  • Unit 1 – Understanding Addiction – In the first unit of the addiction counselling course you will learn about the definition of addiction and the common types of addictions. We will look at the prevalence and impact of addiction. You will cover the neurobiology of addiction and the role of neurotransmitters. In this unit you will also cover some of the different assessments tools and interview techniques.
  • Unit 2 – The Psychology of Addiction – In the second unit you will explore the psychological factors involved in addiction including the role of stress and trauma, co-occurring mental health disorders, and coping mechanisms. You will learn about motivational interviewing goal setting and treatment planning and the stages of change model.
  • Unit 3 – Treatment Approaches – In this unit we will explore different treatment approaches for addressing addiction. The unit will provide an overview of pharmacological interventions, counselling modalities and support group frameworks aimed at supporting individuals in their recovery journey.
  • Unit 4 – Ethical and Practical Considerations –  In the final unit you will explore ethical and practical dimensions of addiction counselling, addressing diverse cultural and ethical considerations. You will examine topics on confidentiality and privacy concerns, ethical dilemmas, cultural influences on addiction and strategies for promoting self-care. This unit will provide insights into the requirements for certification as an addiction counsellor, continuing education opportunities and avenues for specialisation.
