This course is designed to give learners an in-depth knowledge of supporting children’s transition to school. It will include both information on transition and practical tips on how to help support children when starting school. The transition process can be a difficult time for children, their parents and carers, and teachers and support staff, so it is important to know how to try and ease this.

In this course you will look at how transitioning to school can impact on children’s development, both positively and negatively, you will consider some of the practical ways in which practitioners can help to prepare children for school alongside working towards the Early Learning Goals.

You will explore children’s ‘school readiness’ under the following categories: working with themselves, working with other children and working with adults, you will look at these categories in-depth and consider what is included in them. You will also take a look at how practitioners can help to promote communication, confidence, independence, managing and controlling feelings and behaviour, and co-operation in their settings through the prime areas of learning.

Finally you will explore how transition can be defined, its effects on the brain and its potential effects on children’s development in the Early Years Foundation Stage. You will also consider insecure attachment relationships and securely attached children.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

What is school readiness

In this first unit we will look at how ‘school readiness’ is defined, the dangers of the ‘school readiness’ agenda, starting school, and a positive definition of the term that you can use going forward.

What are the characteristics of school readiness

This unit will help you to understand some of the characteristics of school readiness. You will address children’s ‘school readiness’ under the following categories: Working with themselves, working with other children and working with adults. You will look at what these things are and how practitioners can help to promote them in their settings through the prime areas of learning.

How to prepare children for school

In this unit you will look at some of the practical ways in which practitioners can help to prepare children for school alongside working towards the Early Learning Goals. Finally you will think about children moving from Reception to Year 1 at the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage, as well as children moving from one setting to another e.g. from nursery to school.

The potential effects of transition

In the final unit you will look at the potential effects of transition, both positive and negative as well as taking a look at how transition can be defined, its effect on the brain and its potential effects on children’s development in the EYFS.

Reducing work-related stress

In this unit you will consider how workplace stress can be reduced and what kind of strategies can be put into place to achieve this. You will consider the importance of supporting staff who may be undergoing stress and working out what the causes of stress are, so that these can be reduced or eliminated where possible. The unit also examines how future stresses can be avoided and how this can be monitored within the workplace.

Reasonable adjustments

This unit considers the kinds of reasonable adjustments that organisations can make so that their employees are able to work safely, without detriment to their mental or physical well-being that can be caused by workplace stress. Many different reasonable adjustments are described in relation to the benefits that they may bring to employees.
