The course will cover why it is important to know the typical language milestones a child will reach and each language milestone for each stage in a child’s life from birth to 10 years old.

You will cover communication formulas and the factors needed to become a successful and skilful communicator and how to achieve these. You will explore the different types of communication, including verbal and non-verbal communication, written and visual communication, and listening.

You will also explore how the different age groups communicate and the ways in which practitioners can interact appropriately with them. You will cover the best ways to build children’s communication skills and how adults can support children and help extend their speech. You will look at the benefits of children having support from adults on their emotional development, behavioural development and social development.

You will explore the ways practitioners can communicate with children who have language and communication difficulties. You will look at the differences between language delay and language disorder as well as ways in which we can support children with speech, language and communication difficulties for each communication impairment.

You will then move onto looking at how speech, language and communication supports all seven areas of children’s development. You will also cover the Every Child a Talker (ECaT) project and how practitioners can use the strategies within it to support children’s language development.
