In this first unit, you will explore what speech impairments and language disorders are, how they affect learning, communication, and social interaction, the common signs to look for, and how many people in the UK are affected by speech impairments.
Types of Speech Impairment
In unit 2, you will explore the different types of speech impairments, building on the four main categories introduced earlier. The unit covers common conditions such as stammering, lisps, aphasia, dysarthria, and apraxia of speech, as well as less common speech impairments, including selective mutism, cluttering, voice disorders, and speech difficulties linked to hearing impairment.
Causes of Speech Impairment
In unit 3, you will explore the causes of speech impairments, including neurological conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, and brain tumours, physical and structural factors like cleft lip or palate and vocal cord problems, and other possible contributing causes.
Treatment for Speech Impairment
In this final unit, you will explore treatment options for speech impairments, with a focus on speech therapy, its goals, how it works, and who can benefit, as well as other treatments and how approaches may differ for children and adults.
