In our Safer Recruitment for Education course, you will be introduced to safer recruitment in education, what it means and how it relates to safeguarding. You will consider why safer recruitment is important, who is at risk and where it applies.
The course will cover the relevant legislation and guidance relating to safer recruitment, including Working Together to Safeguarding Children 2018 guidance, Keeping Children Safe in Education 2021 guidance, the Governance handbook etc.
You will cover the early stages of recruitment from planning safer recruitment to placing a job advert and receiving applications. You will explore how to encourage the most suitable applicants for the role and deter unsuitable applicants from working with children and young people.
You will also explore the selection stage of the recruitment process, including what to consider on receipt of application forms. You will cover scrutinising applications, shortlisting and informing applicants whether they have been successful or unsuccessful. You will look at requesting and scrutinising references and some things to look out for when checking them. You will also look at self-disclosure forms and other considerations, such as equality, discrimination and special requirements.
You will then move onto the preparations that must be done before carrying out interviews, what should happen in an interview including examples of techniques and questions to ask. You will also consider when separate safeguarding interviews may be required and some actions to take if there are any causes for concern.
You will then move onto looking at making a conditional offer of employment to the successful candidate and the checks required before an appointment is made, including DBS checks. You will also look at what is required when recruiting agency workers and overseas workers. You will learn about the importance of maintaining a single central record of pre-appointment checks.
Finally, you will explore the purpose of inducting new staff and what to include when planning and developing a programme. You will also look at the statutory requirements regarding policies, procedures and training. You will also look at what is involved in maintaining a safe culture within an educational setting and the importance of supervision and monitoring.
In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.
You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

In the first unit you will be introduced to safer recruitment in education. You will explore relevant legislation and guidance relating to safer recruitment. The unit will finish by exploring four case studies of child abuse occurring in educational settings, which will emphasise the importance of having and following safer recruitment practice.
Preparing to Recruit
In this unit you will be introduced to the early stages of recruitment, including planning and how to deter suitable and unsuitable applicants. You will look at the requirements for safer recruitment arrangements and the need for policies and procedures. You will consider what to include in a safer recruitment policy.
The Selection Process
In this unit you will explore the selection stage of the recruitment process, scrutinising references and how to use self-disclosure forms, including considerations about equality, discrimination and special requirements. You will finish the unit by looking at how to prepare for the interview stage of the recruitment process.
The Interview Process
In this unit you will consider the preparations to carry out before interviews commence, such as selecting the interview panel, meeting before the first candidate arrives and reasonable adjustments. You will finish the unit by looking at briefly what should happen when closing an interview and after the process is completed.
Pre-appointment
In this unit you will look at making a conditional offer of employment to successful candidates. You will consider the traditional checks required for teachers and management, as well as requirements for agency workers and overseas workers. The unit will finish with you looking at what to consider when completing all checks and the requirements for keeping records after making an appointment.
Induction and Safe Culture
In the final unit you will explore the purpose of inducting new staff and the statutory requirements regarding policies, procedures and training. You will finish the unit by looking at the processes for confidential reporting or whistleblowing and what education providers need to do.
