All about this Food Safety and Hygiene for Catering Level 1 Course

This course is suitable for workers who are not directly involved with preparing or handling high-risk open (unwrapped) food. For example, bar staff, front-of-house employees, food delivery drivers and riders, retail workers, e.g., shops and newsagents.

One of the legal requirements food business officers (FBOs) have is to ensure that food handlers are supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters commensurate with their work activity. This course will include an overview of the legal requirements, key food safety hazards and personal hygiene. The course will also cover some of the controls you must follow to help ensure food is safe during handling.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

You will earn 2 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 2 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

Please note – If you directly prepare, cook or handle high-risk foods you must undertake a Food Safety and Hygiene Level 2 course (either catering, retail or manufacturing) to comply with the law. If you are a supervisor or manager, you should complete our Food Safety for Catering Level 3 course.

Units covered

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to Food Hygiene – In the first unit of the food safety and hygiene for catering level 1 course you will be introduced to food hygiene and look at an overview of the legal requirements, including allergen laws.
  • Unit 2 – Personal Hygiene – In the second unit of the course you will explore personal hygiene and its importance when handling food. You will consider the potential impacts of poor personal hygiene in a food environment.
  • Unit 3 – Key Hazards – This unit will cover the four types of food hazards, which are, microbiological, chemical, physical and allergenic. You will also look at food born illnesses, food poisoning, spoilage and pests.
  • Unit 4 – Control Measures – In the final unit of the food safety and hygiene for catering level 1 course you will look at some control measures that you should follow to help keep food safe and free from contamination.
