Food labelling regulations ensure food labelling is regulated to protect consumers from misleading information. Consumers must have the correct information about the food and drink they purchase to make informed choices and be confident that what is on the label reflects what is inside the packaging.Environmental Health officer Approved Course

This course will provide information on the legal requirements for labelling under the Food Information Regulations 2014 and the FIC Regulation (food information to consumers). It will also include what food businesses cannot print on food packaging and labels, e.g. nutritional and health claims. The course will also cover the importance of allergen labelling, nutrition information, traceability, and the impact of Brexit on food labelling rules.

You will learn about the labelling requirements for pre-packaged and loose food, including the mandatory particulars that must legally be on packaging or labels, you will also consider the rules for labelling presentations.

You will consider the mandatory particulars, such as the name of the food, ingredients list, allergen information, QUID, net quantity, date labelling, storage conditions/conditions of use, name and address of the food business operator, country of origin and preparation instructions. You will also look at the labelling requirements for those producing or importing wine. You will move onto considering the rules for displaying nutrition and health claims.

You will also look at traceability and labelling, including product recalls and some examples in the UK, you will learn the labelling requirements when distance selling. You will explore specific requirements for labelling vegan, vegetarian, kosher and halal foods, as well as the food assurance schemes and labelling.

In the final unit of the course, you will explore how leaving the European Union (EU) has impacted the labelling of specific food blends and types (olive oil blends, honey blends, fruit and vegetable mixes, minced meat, beef and veal, and eggs). You will also consider how Northern Ireland (NI) rules differ from Great Britain (GB).

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

You will earn 6 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 5 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to Food Labelling – In the first unit of the food labelling course, you will be introduced to the food labelling regulations and will look at an overview of the legal requirements, including UK food labelling laws.
  • Unit 2 – Food Labelling Regulations Explained – In this unit you will look at the requirements of the food labelling regulations in further detail. You will also look at the mandatory particulars.
  • Unit 3 – Nutrition Information and Traceability – This unit will explore the nutritional information required on food labels under the FIC Regulation. You will also look at the mandatory nutritional information required by law and the voluntary information permitted.
  • Unit 4 – Additional Regulations – You will look at some examples of additional regulations and rules for specific food products, including what reserved descriptions and compositional standards are.
  • Unit 5 – Logos and Marketing Terms – This unit will cover examples of marketing terms, voluntary descriptions and symbols/logos that food business operators may use on food labels.
  • Unit 6 – Brexit Impact on UK Regulations – In the final unit of the food labelling course, you will look at the impact of Brexit on various UK food labelling regulations and rules. You will also look at the changes to health and indication marks for products of animal origin.
