At the start of the course you will be introduced to the structure of the brain and how it functions, as well as statistics on acquired brain injuries in adults and children. You will then learn the complications and conditions that cause acquired brain injuries, as well as the risk factors for these causes and the course will outline the presenting symptoms. You will also gain an understanding of the impacts of an acquired brain injury.

You will also explore how the ongoing effects of an acquired brain injury can be helped with rehabilitation from a multidisciplinary team. The course will finish by covering how family and close friends can support someone with an acquired brain injury, as well as covering the legal and financial aspects of living with an acquired brain injury. Links to support websites for the individual, their family and those working in healthcare are also included.

  • Unit 4 – Treatment for Acquired Brain Injury – This unit will cover how an acquired brain injury is treated both at initial presentation and as a chronic condition, this unit will also explore how to plan for and manage the effects on lifestyle factors, such as education, work and socialising.
  • Unit 5 – Supporting Someone with an Acquired Brain Injury – In the final unit of the acquired brain injuries course, you will explore how to support someone with an acquired brain injury and what support is available to those caring for them.
