All about this PUWER Awareness Course
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) came about to ensure that any equipment provided and used at work is without risks to health and safety, regardless of what it is, and its age, condition or origin.
Throughout this course you will explore what PUWER is, definitions and who has duties under the regulations. You will explore what duty holders must do to comply with the law.
You will also explore the legislation relevant to PUWER and some case studies where duty holders have been prosecuted for failing to protect people from the risks associated with work equipment.
You will look at the meanings of hazard, risk and risk assessment. You will consider the legal requirements for risk assessment, why they are important and who is responsible. You will explore the five steps of risk assessment.
You will look at the work equipment that requires inspection under PUWER and how it relates to the risk assessment process.
You will look at the requirements for maintenance, inspection and thorough examination. You will also consider the training, information and instruction those using and maintaining work equipment may need.
Finally, you will look at the specific requirements for power presses and mobile work equipment.
In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.
You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

Introduction to PUWER
In the first unit of the PUWER course you will be introduced to what PUWER is and what it requires. You will explore employer and employee duties relating to PUWER and the responsibilities of hire companies and construction contractors.
Relevant Legislation
In this unit you will explore the laws related to the use of equipment in the workplace and the enforcement action duty holders could face if they do not comply with the legislation.
Assessing Risks
Throughout this unit you will explore how to assess health and safety risks associated with the provision and use of equipment in the workplace, you will also cover risk assessments.
Safety standards and controls
In the final unit you will explore safety standards and ways of reducing and controlling the risks associated with PUWER. You will explore the hierarchy of hazard control and some examples relating to work equipment.
