All about this Lead Awareness Course

Lead is a naturally occurring heavy toxic metal found in the Earth’s crust (rocks and soil), water and air. It is a soft (bluish, silvery, white or grey) lustrous metal extracted from ores dug from underground mines worldwide. However, there have been bans on certain lead products in the last century due to the associated health risks.

In the lead awareness course, you will gain knowledge on what lead is. You will look at some statistics and case studies relating to lead, highlighting the importance of controlling exposure. You will also look at the requirements for risk assessments and how to apply the assess, control and review model.

You will look at the importance of welfare facilities and what employers should provide to employees at risk of lead exposure. You will look at other control measures and why it is important to maintain, test and examine them. You will look at some of the actions required if an individual’s lead levels are too high. You will look at lead poisoning, the treatments available and further actions required.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

Units covered

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to Lead Awareness – In the first unit you will be introduced to lead awareness, what lead is, the history and where it is found. You will also look at why lead is dangerous and how it can affect a person’s health.
  • Unit 2 – Laws surrounding lead – In this unit you will be introduced to the law surrounding lead and will look at relevant legislation, you will consider the responsibilities employers, employees and the self-employed workers have relating to the risks associated with lead exposure.
  • Unit 3 – Lead control measures – In this unit you will explore lead control measures and why employers should first prevent exposure to lead in the workplace. You will then look at how employers can adequately control exposure if it is not preventable.
  • Unit 4 – Lead and health – In the final unit, you will be introduced to lead and health. You will look at the requirements for health and medical surveillance and how employees’ health is checked at work and the recommended blood-lead and urinary-lead requirements. You will finish by looking at the requirements for data protection regarding employees’ medical information and health records.
