All about this Health and Safety for Managers course

This Health and Safety for Managers course is perfect for managers and supervisors who want to expand their knowledge. Covering all relevant legislation and regulations that you need to know about, this course will go into greater detail about carrying out risk assessments in the workplace and how to reduce the chance of accidents occurring in the workplace. We also look drugs and alcohol at work, who is more at risk and the legislation surrounding various workplace situations. Conflict in the workplace will also be covered and students will learn how they can resolve conflict, as well as the steps that can be put in place to prevent it occurring. Upon completion of this Health and Safety for Managers course, students will feel more confident to be able to support staff in numerous settings.

Units covered

  • Unit 1 – Health and Safety Legislation – In our first unit you will consider what health and safety is and the reasons for why it is important. You will then explore the two main pieces of health and safety legislation and consider the health and safety regulations and their role in supporting the main pieces of legislation. This unit will finish off by exploring the requirements of RIDDOR.
  • Unit 2 – Risk in the workplace – Next you will be introduced to the concepts of hazard and risk and consider the difference between the two. You will then look at the seven hazard categories and the hazards that are included in those categories, you will then consider the need for first aid, the legal duties and the provisions that should be considered.
  • Unit 3 – Assessing risk – Here we will explore the meaning of hazards, risks and risk assessment, you will consider why risk assessments are important and learn who is responsible for completing risk assessments, you will be introduced to the five steps of risk assessments. This unit will finish off by looking at the different types of risk assessment and how these can be used in different situations.
  • Unit 4 – Equipment in the workplace – In this unit you will be introduced to the definition of work equipment and some general examples, you will cover the main requirements of PUWER and the different types of equipment that can be found in the workplace, as well as the hazards associated with this equipment. Finally we will consider what PPE is and you will look at the regulation in detail.
  • Unit 5 – Manual handling and ergonomics –Ergonomics and the associated hazards are covered in this section and you will also cover some examples of workplaces where manual handling occurs and explore the injuries that can occur from manual handling operations. On completion of this unit students will feel more confident knowing their duties as well as how to protect other employees.
  • Unit 6 – Hazardous substance and electricity – In this unit you will be introduced to hazardous substances and what they are, you will also consider how people can be exposed in the workplace and what effects they can have. You will explore the legislation surrounding hazardous substances and consider what precautions can be put in place. This unit will finish off by considering what the hazards of electricity are and who is at risk and the precautions that can be put in place to prevent or reduce the risk.
  • Unit 7 – Alcohol and drugs – Understanding the risks of alcohol and drug use, who is at risk of having problems relating to alcohol and drugs, as well as drug and alcohol policies and the steps involved in drug and alcohol screening/testing are now explained. This unit will finish off by covering how an employer can provide support for employees who have problems with alcohol and/or drugs and how training should be included on drugs and alcohol policies in the workplace.
  • Unit 8 – Working at height, noise, vibration – In this unit you will be introduced to work at height and explore examples and the risks associated with different activities, you will learn the different work at height regulations, as well as the importance of risk assessments and how to carry one out. At the end of this unit students will feel more confident in protecting themselves and other workers from work at height accidents. We will finish off by considering what precautions and controls can be put in place for reducing the risks of vibration
  • Unit 9 – Fire risk and precautions in the workplace – This unit will explore the importance of fire safety in the workplace , the laws and legislation relating to fire safety in the workplace and the steps to a fire risk assessment. The ways to prevent fires will also be covered as well as the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) (2002) and you will learn the main requirements.
  • Unit 10 – Vehicle safety – Next you will be introduced to workplace transport and consider what this means, as well as some of the common causes of accidents involving workplace transport. The legislation relating to workplace transport management will also be covered. The unit will then finish off by exploring the requirements for a safe site and focus on two main areas – design and activities.
  • Unit 11 – Conflict and violence in the workplace – Conflict in the workplace is just as important to understand as physical safety and here we look at when problems can arise. Ways to prevent and handle conflict will also be covered so students will feel more confident when they have to handle conflict at work. This unit will then move onto covering work-related violence on employers and the physical examples, as well as how it can affect people psychologically. The legislation relating to work-related violence will also be covered, so students will feel more confident covering this subject in the workplace.
  • Unit 12 – Health, Culture, Consultation and Training at work – In our final unit you will be exploring work-related stress, what the effects can be as well as the causes and how to manage work related stress. The unit will move onto looking at health and safety culture and what it means, as well as the benefits of it and how to promote it in your workplace. You will finally finish off by considering the legal requirements for health and safety training.
