All about this course

Environmental Health officer Approved Course

Food labelling regulations ensure food labelling is regulated to protect consumers from misleading information. Consumers must have the correct information about the food and drink they purchase to make informed choices and be confident that what is on the label reflects what is inside the packaging.

This course will provide information on the legal requirements for labelling under the Food Information Regulations 2014 and the FIC Regulation (food information to consumers). It will also include what food businesses cannot print on food packaging and labels, e.g. nutritional and health claims. The course will also cover the importance of allergen labelling, nutrition information, traceability, and the impact of Brexit on food labelling rules.

You will learn about the labelling requirements for pre-packaged and loose food, including the mandatory particulars that must legally be on packaging or labels, you will also consider the rules for labelling presentations.

You will consider the mandatory particulars, such as the name of the food, ingredients list, allergen information, QUID, net quantity, date labelling, storage conditions/conditions of use, name and address of the food business operator, country of origin and preparation instructions. You will also look at the labelling requirements for those producing or importing wine. You will move onto considering the rules for displaying nutrition and health claims.

You will also look at traceability and labelling, including product recalls and some examples in the UK, you will learn the labelling requirements when distance selling. You will explore specific requirements for labelling vegan, vegetarian, kosher and halal foods, as well as the food assurance schemes and labelling.

In the final unit of the course, you will explore how leaving the European Union (EU) has impacted the labelling of specific food blends and types (olive oil blends, honey blends, fruit and vegetable mixes, minced meat, beef and veal, and eggs). You will also consider how Northern Ireland (NI) rules differ from Great Britain (GB).

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.
