Our Electrical Safety Awareness course is suitable for anyone working with or near electricity.

Throughout this Electrical Safety Awareness course you will learn the dangers associated with electricity and that they can often be underestimated, particularly in lower-risk environments such as offices.

You will also gain a greater knowledge around what electricity is and how it is generated, you will learn that it is a form of energy that is created by a flow of charged particles known as electrons.

Electricity flows across the country and into buildings at different voltages. Therefore, there is a risk of people coming into contact with it, particularly when working on and around it.

In this course you will acknowledge the risks associated with overhead power lines and the precautions that should be taken to reduce the risk of electrical injury.

At the end of our Electrical Safety Awareness course you will learn that emergencies can happen and when they do, they must be dealt with safely and quickly to ensure that the situation doesn’t worsen. You will acknowledge the regulations and legislation around electricity and also how they apply if an accident was to occur.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

Units covered

  • Unit 1 – Introduction – In this unit of our Electrical Safety Awareness course, you will be introduced to electricity and will consider what it is and why it is dangerous. You will look at the meanings of current and voltage, so that you can understand the risks associated with electricity. You will learn about how electricity is generated and transported to workplaces. You will also look at static electricity and why it is a risk. You will explore some of the electrical accidents that can occur and some examples of causes. You will look at electrical injuries in further detail.
  • Unit 2 – Identifying and assessing risks – In this unit, you will be introduced to the meaning of accidents, incidents (near misses), hazards and risk. You will look at some examples relating to electrical work. You will look at the meaning of risk assessment and will look at what the law requires. You will consider what constitutes a suitable and sufficient risk assessment. You will consider why risk assessment is important. You will look at legal, moral and financial reasons for why risk assessments should be in place. You will learn about who is responsible for risk assessments and who is competent to complete them.
  • Unit 3 – Raising awareness and controlling hazards – In this unit, you will be introduced to some examples of the electrical systems and equipment in workplaces. You will look at the selection and suitability of electrical systems and equipment. You will look at safety aspects and other factors that can reduce the risks. You will consider the options in the hierarchy of control and will look at some examples relating to electrical systems and equipment. Finally, you will consider the importance of reporting and recording electrical hazards.
  • Unit 4 – Safe working practices – In this last unit of our Electrical Safety Awareness course, you will be introduced to working safely near to, and on, electricity. You will explore the risks associated with overhead power lines. You will look at some precautions that should be taken to reduce the risks. You will learn about the risks associated with underground electrical cables. You will explore how three elements in a safe system of work can reduce the risk of electrical injury.
