Duty of care can be defined as a legal obligation that employers and employees have to ensure the safety and well-being of others. Duty of care is a legal requirement, breaches of this duty can result in legal action. All employees should have some element of training to ensure they understand the company’s overall duty of care and the part they play, their personal duty of care responsibilities.

All about this Duty of Care Course

There is a duty of care in every type of work, all employers and employees have a duty of care. This can be for their customers, members of the public or their colleagues. In health and social care, care providers have a duty of care to the people who use their services, their employees, stakeholders, external professionals and members of the public.

Health and social care staff may have differing levels of duty of care depending on their role and responsibilities. All staff will have a duty of care to the people receiving care and to their colleagues.

In this course you will explore Duty of Care in more detail, including in terms of the Code of Conduct for Health and Social Care Staff, you will explore the 7 Standards. You will explore the principles of implementing Duty of Care and will look at two case studies illustrating how different settings can meet Duty of Care Requirements.

You will look at Policies and Procedures relating to Duty of Care, what should be in place, the importance of keeping policies and procedures up to date and what should be included in policies.

You will review the Do’s and Don’ts of managing incidents, near misses and errors, before looking at some examples of the types of incidents, near misses and errors you could come across.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

Units covered

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to Duty of Care – In the first unit you will discuss who could benefit from Duty of Care training, who Duty of Care applies to and what we mean by Duty of Care. You will discuss why Duty of Care is important and briefly touch on how Duty of Care links to Legislation.
  • Unit 2 – How Duty of Care affects your work – In this unit you will look at the implications of Duty of Care for staff and how staff can meet their Duty of Care requirements. You will also look at some of the legal obligations involved in Duty of Care and how they can be achieved, with examples of these in practice.
  • Unit 3 – Duty of Care Dilemma’s – In this unit you will look at the implications of Duty of Care for staff and how staff can meet their Duty of Care requirements. You will also look at some of the legal obligations involved in Duty of Care and how they can be achieved, with examples of these in practice.
  • Unit 4 – Incidents, Errors and Near Misses – In the final unit of the Duty in Care course, you will look at how to effectively deal with incidents, near misses or errors that have resulted in potential breaches of Duty of Care.
