All about this COMAH Awareness course

This course provides a detailed overview of the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations and their role in preventing and controlling major accidents involving dangerous substances. It explains how the regulations were introduced following the Seveso disaster and outlines their purpose in protecting people, the environment, and property from the consequences of major industrial accidents.

Learners will explore the scope and application of COMAH, including key definitions and terminology, enforcement arrangements, and the legal framework that underpins compliance. The course examines major accident hazards, the types of incidents that can occur, and the potential consequences, supported by real-world case studies and examples of past accidents. It also considers common causes of major accidents and introduces methods for hazard identification and risk assessment used by COMAH operators.

The course goes on to explain the main requirements placed on lower-tier and upper-tier establishments, highlighting operator responsibilities, safety management systems, and reporting duties. Learners will also explore examples of non-compliance and enforcement action under COMAH 2015. The final part of the course focuses on accident prevention and mitigation measures, emergency planning requirements, and the actions operators must take if a major accident occurs. By the end of the course, learners will have a thorough understanding of COMAH responsibilities and how effective compliance helps reduce risk and protect workers, the public, and the environment.

You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.
